The new Smart Cities Marketplace publication reinforces the need for integrated district approaches - and echoes NEUTRALPATH’s mission to turn positive and clean energy districts into replicable pathways for urban climate neutrality.
The booklet presents Positive Energy Districts, or PEDs, as a practical route for European cities trying to decarbonise neighbourhoods, modernise local energy systems and improve quality of life through integrated urban transformation.
For NEUTRALPATH, this message is especially relevant. The project is working to advance Positive and Clean Energy Districts (PCEDs) as concrete, co-designed solutions for climate-neutral cities. NEUTRALPATH, indeed, supports the development of district-based solutions that combine clean energy, governance innovation and replication potential across Europe.
The Smart Cities Marketplace booklet underlines that PEDs are no longer only about achieving an annual positive renewable energy balance. It describes them as holistic, resilient and inclusive districts where renewable energy generation, energy efficiency, flexibility, mobility, ICT and governance are brought together in one integrated vision. It also highlights key themes such as local energy communities, storage, sector coupling and the four core technological pillars of PED energy systems: energy efficiency, renewable production, flexibility and e-mobility.
This systems perspective closely matches NEUTRALPATH’s own approach. NEUTRALPATH is demonstrating the value of PCEDs in Dresden and Zaragoza, while supporting replication in Ghent, Istanbul and Vantaa. The project aims not only to test technologies, but also to improve governance processes and make business models and implementation methods easier for other cities to adopt.
What makes the publication particularly valuable is its emphasis on moving from isolated interventions to district-scale integration. This is also where NEUTRALPATH contributes: by co-designing climate-friendly solutions with cities and local stakeholders, and by translating ambitious climate targets into implementable district strategies that can be scaled and replicated. Recent NEUTRALPATH activities, including climate-neutrality labs and capacity-building work with cities, reflect that same commitment to turning vision into action.
For municipalities, practitioners and urban stakeholders, the Positive Energy Districts Solution Booklet is therefore more than a reference document. It is a reminder that climate neutrality will be achieved through integrated local action – and that districts are one of the most effective scales at which to deliver it. For NEUTRALPATH, this publication strengthens the case for positive and clean energy districts as a cornerstone of Europe’s climate-neutral transition.
