NEUTRALPATH introduces Energize, an educational game developed by Three o’clock and co-created with partners from across the NEUTRALPATH consortium. Designed to support cities on their journey towards climate neutrality, the game helps translate complex energy topics into a hands-on and engaging experience.
Aimed at players aged eight and above, Energize can be played by two to four participants. Each player manages a district and works towards reducing its energy consumption to zero. Along the way, players make choices about investments, services, behavioural changes and awareness actions, represented through different sets of cards. The game highlights how everyday decisions can influence energy use at neighbourhood level, touching on themes such as building retrofitting, energy-efficient appliances, electric mobility and community involvement.
Energize is currently available in six languages: English, Spanish, Finnish, Dutch and Turkish, helping make the tool accessible to a wide range of communities across Europe. New languages are being implemented including Italian, Greek and French. The game has been co-created with five European Living Labs, ensuring that its content reflects real local challenges and citizen perspectives from NEUTRALPATH’s lighthouse and fellow cities.
Since its release, Energize has been used in several public events. In Istanbul, families and young people explored how individual habits can contribute to more sustainable urban living. In Dresden, the game supported community workshops as an educational tool. More recently, Energize was used in Zaragoza during the Open Day citizen engagement event, where it helped introduce NEUTRALPATH innovations to residents of the Actur District, who will be involved in the local pilot.
Energize shows how playful approaches can support learning, participation and collective action. The game will continue to be used across NEUTRALPATH cities as part of ongoing citizen engagement activities throughout the project.
