Over the years, Dresden has taken bold steps to align its urban transformation goals with international sustainability standards. By joining the Climate Alliance in 1994 and the Covenant of Mayors in 2016, the city has consistently elevated its climate action ambitions. In 2022, Dresden was selected as one of the EU Mission “100 Climate Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030,” and by December of the same year, the City Council set a new milestone: achieving greenhouse gas neutrality by 2035.
Luke Bojčev, Smart City Manager at Dresden Municipality, shares insights about Dresden’s two pilots’ sites modelling Positive and Clean Energy Districts, which represent common building types in Germany: high-rise apartment complexes and detached multifamily compact buildings.
By testing technologies like low-temperature district heating and bidirectional EV charging, Dresden ensures these innovations can be applied locally and across Europe.
One of the most visible initiatives for Dresden’s citizens will be the construction of High-Power Charging stations at both pilot sites. These fast-charging hubs will provide convenient and efficient charging options for electric vehicles, making sustainable mobility more accessible.
