Ghent

The city of Ghent is developing schemes in the Muide-Meulestede district to improve its strategy towards climate neutrality.

Ghent is Belgium’s third largest city, with a rich history, vibrant city life and a port. Ghent wants to be fossil-free and climate-neutral by 2050. The city, together with other partners such as Ghent University, is developing a holistic and inclusive transition strategy and seeks to launch and spread technical and social innovations through pilot projects. The Muide-Meulestede district is experimenting with transition initiatives to become a climate-neutral and resilient district. In Muide-Meulestede, a district heating network is being designed to heat homes in the district with RES and solar installations on nearby rooftops. The feasibility of this PCED project should be considered from technical, spatial, economic and social perspectives (renovation needs, district heating optimalisation, organizing and involving residents and key actors, district heating system and its procurement, etc.). The CN Lab will develop and evaluate different approaches and organization models.

CN-Lab

The Climate-Neutral Labs act as innovation hubs with dual purposes: engaging local stakeholders and citizens in co-designing PCEDs and learning from other cities to accelerate the process toward climate neutrality.

The objectives of Living Lab Muide-Meulestede Fossil Fuel-Free are:
– The development of an implementation plan for an inclusive PCED
– The development of a collaborative organizational model for the PCED, including business models and exploitation
strategies
– Improvement of institutional capacity and
engagement of stakeholders with a
participatory approach.
